Iron ore: Mesco group has two mines allocated to them

  • at Barbil allotted to MISL. This is a private mine, the products of which can be sold in the open market and is not linked to any captive consumption.
  • located around 50 Kms away from Roida mines is allotted to MESCO Steel Ltd. It is recognized as one of the best mines in India spread over 1500 hectares with management estimated reserves of over 1000 million tons. Mining is expected to commence by 2014. The mine is captive to steel plants of MESCO Group and for supply of ore to other steel manufacturers in the Dubri region of Odisha where MISL’s existing plant is located.
Roida mines is now in operation and the Malangtoli mines is proposed to be put into operation to coincide with the 3 million tonne plant of MISL. Roida mine has an area of 104 hectares with proven iron ore reserves of 200 million tonnes. Currently mining is done in 51.6 hectares with average Fe content of 60 to 63%. Forest clearance for balance area is expected to be completed shortly. Approved mining plan up to 3 million tons is in place and company has already applied for another 6 million tonnes. Out of the total production, part is consumed by MISL’s Pig Iron plant and the rest is sold in the open market.

The company has put following equipment at mines:

  • 100 TPH Crusher - 1 No.
  • 200 TPH Crusher - 1 No.

In addition to above the company has taken 2 crushers from outside parties on contract, which are exclusively used for MISL production.
List of other equipments and facilities is as follows:

  • Power Screens | | 3Nos.
  • Excavator | 2Cu.M | 6Nos.
  • Tippers/Dumpers | 25Tfor 200TPH | 15Nos.
  • Drill | 100mm Dia | 3Nos.

  • Pneumatic Drills | | Adequate Nos.
  • Water Sprinkler/ Tanker | | 3Nos.
  • Pay Loader | 2.5Cu.M | 3Nos.
  • Tools & Tackles| | Adequate Nos.

Roida mine is well connected with state highways, the company is moving its material through rail as well road.

Apart from iron ore MISL and Mesco Group have following allocations of mines:

  • Coking coal mine in Chindwara, Madhyapradesh with 18 million tonnes of reserves. Process for obtaining forest and environment clearances for the coal block allotted to Mesco Steel in Chindwara district, Madhya Pradesh has been put on a fast-track, with the submission of a revised application. A coal washery will be set up at the mine head.
  • Limestone and Dolomite mines in Katni, Madhyapradesh covering 981 hectares.
  • Limestone Mines in Rewa ,Madhyapradesh with estimated reserves of 150 to 200 million tonnes of reserves.

Steel Making

The steel plant of MISL is located on about 237 hectares in Odisha, the steel belt of India. MISL has two, 389 cubic meters blast furnaces supported by commensurate raw material handling system, power plant and blower house, power distribution system, plant water system and associated essential services. The hot metal production capacity of the existing blast furnaces has been estimated to be around 700,000 tonnes per year, with up to 70 per cent sinter in the burden and balance sized ore. The hot metal is currently cast into Pig Iron. MISL has now embarked on a major expansion at its plant. The expansion is consistent with the company’s philosophy of becoming one of India’s major fully integrated steel companies. The current expansion plan is to take the finished steel capacity to 3.5 million tonnes in 2 phases. The finished products will be wire rods and rebars.

Iron Making

The plant has two operating blast furnaces of useful volumes 389 cubic meters each. The furnaces produce about 1,200 tonnes of hot metal per day. The output is sold as Pig Iron. Two 100 tph pig casting machines support the system. The blast furnaces are designed for 0.5 MPa top pressure. The stoves provided in each furnace are capable of delivering hot blast at 1000 C. Gas cleaning is by adjustable venturi washer. Material charging is by skip car. Facilities for screening of sinter, coke and weighing of the feed materials are provided.

Plant Power Distribution

Power is received over 132 kV double circuit line from Old Duburi sub-station of OPTCL and terminated at MISL switchyard with double bus arrangement. The power limitation for each circuit is 80 MVA. Only one bus is in operation at present. MISL can import upto 3 MVA power from the grid as per present power purchase agreement.

Main HT power distribution in the plant is at 6.6 kV with Main Step Down Substation (MSDS) located adjacent to the 132 kV switchyard. 6.6 kV MSDS is having two bus sections, each feeding various plant local sub-stations. MISL generates about 3 NW power in its own BF gas based 2 x 4.5 MW captive power plant (CPP) and imports about 1.5 MW power from the grid. Existing CPP comprises three 50 tph boilers with BF gas heating and liquid fuel support for generation of steam to run Turbo-Blowers TB-1, TB-2 and TB-3 (one standby) and 4.5 MW Turbo-Generators TG-1 and TG-2 (one of the generators serve as standby at present). The Turbo-Generators (TG-1 and TG-2) feed the 6.6 kV CPP sub-station which in turn is connected to the MSDS.

Plant Water System

Raw make-up water is presently available at plant site through the existing 800 mm diameter, 17 Km long, 1600 m3 per hour capacity cross-country line from IDCO intake pump house on river Brahmani. The plant raw water reservoir capacity is about 120,000 m3. The plant water system comprises raw water treatment plant, water systems pertaining to BF-1 and BF-2, water system for slag granulation for BF-1 and BF-2, water system for CPP and drinking water system. One 150 m3 per day demin plant is also in operation.

Auxiliary facilities

The plant has adequate covered space for central stores, central maintenance shop and laboratory to cater to its existing requirement.

Roads and Drainage

The plant has a regular network of roads, partly metalled. The plant drainage system is partly in place.

Rail Yard

MISL have obtained approval from railways for an in-plant railway yard along with its connection with the east coast railway track near Sukinda Road. This yard will be connected with the east coast railway between Jakhapura and Sukinda Road stations, near the south eastern boundary of the plant. This would enable the plant to receive majority of the raw materials by rail.

Logistics

Our location Is a key success factor providing substantial savings in logistics cost by allowing economical inbound transport of material to and from the plant.

Mines and plant are well connected by rail and road and in close proximity of each other as well as Paradeep port. which allows economical transport of raw material, export and import of raw material and finished goods. Distance between Iron ore mines at Roida, Barbil area and plant is approx. 190 km. Paradeep Port: Port is just 110 km away from plant. National Highway is just 15 kms from plant. Bypass connecting to National Highway is just adjacent to plant. Main broad gauge rail line runs next to the plant boundary, connecting to all main junctions in the state as well as to the port.

MISL have their own railway siding up to the raw material stock yard. . A railway siding with wagon tipplers and carrying capacity of 6.2 million tonnes per annum has already been commissioned. This will be augmented to about 10 million tonnes.

There is assured water supply from the Brahamani River to the plant.

Important logistics parameters:

  • Plant is situated between iron rich belts of Daitari (30 kms) and Keonjhar (130 kms) in Odisha.
  • Proximity to Paradeep Port (120 kms) allows easy import of cooking coal and export of finished goods.
  • Howrah - Chennai broad gauge railway line runs adjacent to the plant site and connects Bhubaneswar and Cuttack as well as Paradeep Port.
  • Bhubaneswar, airport and state capital is110 km away
  • Kolkata is 360 km by rail

MESCO STEEL

Mideast Integrated Steel Ltd. (MISL) was incorporated in 1992 with assets in coastal Odisha in eastern India. It secured the Roida iron ore mining lease in the prime iron ore belt of Odisha in1996.
